Email Following the steps outlined below, you’ll be able to save any of the attachments included with your Gmail messages straight to Dropbox.
  1. To get started, head over to https://www.insynchq.com/gmail and click the Sign in with your Gmail account button at the bottom of the page.

  2. You’ll be redirected to your Google accounts page where you’ll need to grant access to Insynchq.com – make sure that Remember this approval is checked, and then click the Allow button.

  3. On your insync page you’ll need to add an account – so click the Dropbox button.

  4. This time you’ll be redirected to your Dropbox page, where you’ll need to grant access for Insync on your Dropbox account. Click the Allow button.

  5. Finally, set a label to use in Gmail. The default label of @Dropbox is perfect – but you can use anything you’d like. Click the Set label button when you’re done.

  6. At this point there should be a “Connected service” on your Insync page (see the image below – yours won’t be identical but it will be close).

  7. Now open up your Gmail. Locate an email that has an attachment you’d like to save to Dropbox. You can either “move” the email to your @Dropbox label, as illustrated in the image below…

  8. or you can simply apply the @Dropbox label to the email (which means it will remain in your Inbox, but also be included in your @Dropbox “folder”, and thus downloaded to Dropbox).

  9. Once you’ve applied the @Dropbox label to an email with an attachment, your Dropbox folder will automatically create a sub-folder titled Attachments.

  10. click to enlarge

  11. Inside of that folder you’ll find additional folders. Each will be named using the email addresses of people who have sent you messages, that have attachments, that you applied the @Dropbox label to.

  12. click to enlarge

  13. Open one of those folders, and you’ll find the attachment happily waiting for you :)

  14. click to enlarge

  15. Going forward, all you need to do is apply that @Dropbox label to any messages with attachments, and those attachments will be automatically sent to Dropbox. That’s it!

Taking screenshots has always been fun in Windows, especially with Windows Vista and 7, which included the new Snipping Tool. Basically, since Vista, there have been two ways to take screenshots in Windows without third-party software: using keyboard shortcuts or using the Snipping Tool.
Before Windows 8, it was very complicated to take screenshots of the entire screen or even of specific regions of the screen. With Windows 8, you have something else to consider: Windows store apps aka Metro apps. How do you take a screenshot of a Metro app? What if you just want a specific region of the app and not the whole screen? In this article, I’ll go through all the possible ways to capture a screenshot in Windows 8.

The Usual Suspects

Don’t worry, good ol Prt Scrn and Alt + Prt Scrn still work in Windows 8. You can use Prt Scrn on the desktop or in a Windows Store app and it will take a screenshot of the entire screen and save it to the clipboard. Alt + Prt Scrn will take a screenshot of the active window, which only makes sense on the traditional desktop. If you press that on a Windows app, it will just take a full screen capture.

Windows Key + Prt Scrn

In Windows 8, there is also a new keyboard shortcut added which is Windows key + Prt Scrn. This is a nifty little shortcut that captures the entire screen and automatically saves it to your Pictures folder under Screenshots. It saves the file as a PNG file.

Snipping Tool

The snipping tool in Windows 8 is pretty much the same as with previous versions of Windows. To open the Snipping Tool in Windows 8, just go to the Start Screen and start typing snipping. You can choose from four different options to capture your screenshot: free-form, rectangular, window, and full-screen.
snipping tool
You can take screenshots of Metro apps by first opening the Snipping Tool and then going back and opening your Metro app. While in the Metro app, go ahead and press CTRL + Prt Scrn. Windows 8 will quickly switch back to the desktop where you have the snipping tool open and then switch back to the Metro app with the screen overlay. Now you can start capturing depending on what option you chose.

Note that if Windows 8 does not automatically switch you back to the Metro app, you can press Windows Key + TAB to get your back there. Lastly, if you want to capture a right-click context menu in Windows 8, you can use the same trick. Just open the Snipping Tool on the desktop, then right-click on wherever you want and press CTRL + Prt Scrn. You’ll then be able to capture the right-click context menu.
Unfortunately, that’s about all there is to capturing screenshots in Windows 8. Of course, there are a ton of third-party apps for capturing screenshots and you’ll need those if you want to capture a video of your screen, for example. Enjoy!

This tutorial will show you how to automatically send a custom message to each of your new Twitter followers.
Using the terrific and free service IFTTT, you can automatically send a direct message to each new person who follows you on Twitter. Just follow the steps outlined below –
  1. If you don’t already have an IFTTT account, head over to IFTTT.com and sign up for one. The sign-up process is simple and very straight forward (and again, free).
  2. Once your account has been set up, visit the “recipe” page Greet new twitter follower. Scroll down to the section title Activate these Channels first and click the first Activate button.

  3. A browser window will ‘pop-up’ asking you to sign into Twitter and authenticate the IFTTT app. Enter your username/email address and password in the spaces provided, then click the Authorize app button.

  4. Once the “Twitter Channel” has been activated, click the Done button.

  5. Now scroll down to the What’s Happening? section. You’ll see that the default “message” (greeting) that’s sent to each of your new followers is Welcome, Thanks for following! – which is a little boring.

  6. Let’s edit that greeting to something a little more interesting or personal. Remember to leave the D {{UserName}} part of the message intact. Note: keep the 140 character limit in mind, as with all Twitter messages, this one has to be 140 characters or less. Once you’re happy with your automatic greeting (which you can change at any point in time) – click the Use Recipe button.

  7. Now each time someone new follows you on Twitter, they’ll be greeted shortly thereafter with the custom message that you created. It’s that simple!

If you have upgraded Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 to Windows 8, you may find that you have a large Windows.old folder on your system. You can also get a Windows.old folder if you end up doing a refresh of your Windows 8 PC. Lastly, if you do a custom install of Windows 8 and don’t format the partition that already has a previous install of Windows, then you will have a Windows.old folder.
windows old
Luckily, you can remove this Windows.old folder without any problems. On my system, which was an upgrade from Windows 7, the Windows.old folder was taking up almost 15 GB. Since I have a 120 GB SSD, this is a significant amount of space. In this article, I’ll show you how you can remove the folder from your system.
I previously wrote about how to delete the Windows.old folder in Windows 7. The procedure is slightly different and I also mention a second way to do it in this post.

Disk Cleanup

The easiest way to remove the Windows.old folder is to use the disk cleanup tool in Windows 8. To do this, open the Charms bar and then click on the Search icon. Type in cleanup and then click on Settings.
disk cleanup
Then click on Free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files. This will load up Disk Cleanup in Windows 8. Click on Clean up system files.
clean up system files
This will bring up another dialog where you will be able to choose Previous Windows installations.
system files cleanup
Click OK and then click on Delete Files in the pop up box that appears. At that point, Disk Cleanup will begin to delete the previous Windows installations.

Elevated Command Prompt

The other way you can delete the folder is by going to the command prompt. First, you need to open a command prompt as Administrator. You can do this by going to the Start Screen, right-clicking and choosing All apps, and then right-clicking on Command Prompt and choosing Run as Administrator.
elevated command prompt
At the command prompt, you just need to type in the following command:
RD /S /Q %SystemDrive%\windows.old
Note that you may have more than one previous installation in which case you might see Windows.old.000. You can delete the other installations by using the same command and changing the name by appending the .000.
Also, make sure you go into the Windows.old folder and copy out all files that you may want from the previous installation. Once it is deleted, you will not be able to recover any of your files, so really make sure you don’t need anything before you delete it.
Bonus: If you can’t delete the Windows.old folder while still in Windows, you can also try booting to the System Recovery Options and opening a command prompt there. This basically allows you to interface with Windows without Windows actually running. So if the Windows.old folder is locked by some process, you can still delete it.
Read my previous post on how to boot into Windows 8 System Recovery Options. Once you are there, click on Troubleshoot, Advanced Options and then Command Prompt. Then just go ahead and type in the same command mentioned above to delete the Windows.old folder. Hopefully, you won’t have any issues doing it here. Enjoy!

I have loaded Windows 8 on a couple of home PCs and I’ve been running into occasional issues here and there. Recently, I tried to open the Windows Store and I got the following error message:
We weren’t able to connect to the Store. This might have happened because of a server problem or the network connection timed out. Please wait a few minutes and try again.
Here is what the message looks like in Windows 8:
windows store cannot connect
After fiddling with a few settings, I was able to get the Store working again. In this article, I’ll show you the various solutions I tried and hopefully one of them works for you.

Method 1 – Check Date & Time

The first thing you need to do is make sure the date and time on your Windows 8 PC is set correctly. You will not be able to connect to the store if your system time is not accurate. You can fix the time by opening the Charms bar (Windows Key + C) and then typing in Date and Time.
date time windows 8
Now you can click Change date and time to set the system to the correct time. Also, make sure you’re set to the correct Time Zone also.
change time windows 8
Or you can click on Internet Time, click on Change settings and then click on Update now. This will automatically sync your computer with time.windows.com.
internet time
Now try to open the Windows Store app and see if you are able to connect. Hopefully so!

Method 2 – Proxy Server

The other thing you want to check is if your system is going through some proxy server. If it is, you can try to disable the proxy server and see if that lets you connect to the store. You can do this by clicking on the gear icon at the top right, then clicking on Internet Options.
internet options
Then click on the Connections tab and click on the LAN Settings button.
lan settings
Go ahead and uncheck the Use a proxy server for your LAN box.
proxy server
Now try to connect to the Windows Store and see if it works. If not, keep reading.

Method 3 – Log Off/Use Local Account

The next thing you can try is logging off your account and then log back in, especially if you are using a Microsoft account. Also, go to https://login.live.com/ and make sure you can login with your Microsoft credentials. If you are locked out for any reason like your password being hacked, etc, then you will have to restore access to your Microsoft account and then login again in Windows 8.
microsoft account
The other thing you can try is to switch from a Microsoft account to a local account and then try to open the Windows Store. You can do this by going to the Charms bar, clicking on Settings, then clicking on Change PC Settings and then clicking on Users.

Method 4 – Refresh Your PC

The last thing you can do is refresh your PC. This is not ideal as it will reset all of your apps from the Windows Store and remove any third-party programs you installed from a CD/DVD or the Internet. However, if nothing else is working, then this might be your only option.
You can go to PC Settings like shown in Method 3 and click on General. Scroll down and you’ll see Refresh your PC without affecting your files.

Hopefully one of these methods fixed the cannot connect to Windows Store problem on your Windows 8 machine. If not, post a comment here and I’ll try to help. Enjoy!

This brief guide will show you how to have ‘drive icons’ (shortcuts) automatically appear on your desktop when you plug in a USB drive, SD Card, insert a CD or DVD etc.

  1. To get started, head over to the Desktop Media download page and download their free app, Desktop Media. Once the file has finished downloading (it’s very small) – open the .zip and run the installation program. The procedure is very straight forward – just click Next a bunch of times.

  2. Once the installation has completed, Desktop Media will launch. Now try plugging in a USB drive, an SD Card or CD/DVD. A shortcut to that drive will automatically appear on your Desktop.

  3. You can customize Desktop Media by right-clicking on its icon in the System Tray and then select Options…

  4. One item of note is the option to display Fixed drives. A “fixed” drive is one that’s “built in” to your PC (for example, your C: drive). Place a check in the Fixed box to have shortcuts created to them on your Desktop.

  5. Now you’ll be able to quickly access your fixed drives as well.

  6. For your external drives (USB, SD, CD/DVD) – you can also right-click on the shortcut and select Eject to safely remove them from your PC – a very handy option!
