If, for some reason, you want a program not to display in the list of programs in the Add or Remove Programs list in the Control Panel in Windows XP, there is a free utility, called Add/Remove Programs Cleaner, that allows you to hide programs in the Add or Remove Programs list without losing the information needed to uninstall the program.

You may want to hide certain programs to make it a little harder for someone else who uses your computer to uninstall a program on your system. It is also handy if you have a large amount of programs installed on your system and you want to temporarily view a smaller list of programs in the Add or Remove Programs tool.

Download Add/Remove Programs Cleaner from

To view the current list of programs in the Add or Remove Programs tool, select Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs from the Start menu.

Add or Remove Programs option on the Control Panel menu

A list of programs currently installed on your system displays. For this example, we will remove 7-Zip 4.65 from the list.

The Add/Remove Programs Cleaner program does not need to be installed. Simply unzip the file you downloaded and double-click on the AddRemoveCleaner.exe file.

The Add/Remove Programs Cleaner dialog box displays. To hide 7-Zip, select the 7-Zip 4.65 check box so there is no check mark in the box. Click OK.

NOTE: If you decide not to continue with your changes, you can click Cancel to close the Add/Remove Programs Cleaner dialog box without removing any programs from the Add or Remove Programs tool.

7-Zip 4.65 no longer displays in the list of programs on the Add or Remove Programs list.

If you want to uninstall a program that you have hidden, simply run the Add/Remove Programs Cleaner program again and select the empty check box for the program you want to uninstall. The program will be visible, again, in the Add or Remove Programs list.
